Comments : To the Downey Family, Thinking of you as Father\’s Day approaches. I learned your story recently. While browsing the Barnes & Noble website, I found the book Requiem:Images of Ground Zero. While surfing the Web, I discovered your oral history at StoryCorps.net. I have the greatest love and respect for firefighters and police officers because they not only risk their lives very day, they are also Samaritans when off duty. They are always looking to help someone in need--by holding a toy drive, collecting food for the local food pantry or soup kitchen, even donating their vacation time to work at a summer camp for children who have suffered burns, to name just a few of their charitable efforts. My heartfelt thanks for sharing your memories and photos--and for giving me this opportunity to say, \"I care.\"

Comments : I met Deputy Chief Ray Downey\’s godson on the LIRR tonight. I am a 44 yr old African American mother of 3. Just talking to your godson tonight reminded me of how we can NEVER forget! You have my email address ,so when you plan your event for 2009 count me and my family in! Your godson is a great guy- just listen to him talk about how proud he is of his 2 sons who are brave FF and his youngest son who is considering it and his godfather. We didn\’t introduce ourselves but for 30 minutes we talked about 9/11 D.C. Ray Downey and how proud we are to be citizens of the greatest nation in thw world. God Bless Your Family Mrs. Downey.

Comments : To the family of BC Raymond Downey, FDNYIt is the seventh anniversary of this terrible event and I wanted to let you all know your dad is always on my mind and why. A few months after the disaster, a gentleman in Rhode Island was making bracelets out of copper that came from the two towers, each braclet had a different name of a firefighter lost in the attacks. They were like the ones back in the 70\’s with missing POW\’s names on them and the monies raised was being given to 911 charities. Well mine has your dad\’s name on it and I have always wondered about him and his life and then today I came across this website and learned more than I could have imagined. I just wanted you all to know how proud I feel to wear it. I also wanted to thank you for sharing and providing the public with such an informative website.

Comments : As the daughter of a fire fighter I don’t often see my dad show emotion, especially during a disaster when he is the picture of calm.My dad, Don Konkle, Chief of the Harrisburg Fire Department did know Ray and still talks about what a remarkable man he was. This is amazing to me because my dad is a man of few words. I just wanted to pass this along, Ray is remembered by many who knew him, including some of us who never met him, but have heard about what an incredible person he was.He has had an impact that will live on so long as those that knew him keeping talking about him. With love,Ellen Konkle

Comments : I worked with Ray Downey on the Gilmore Commission. He is a constant inspiration. Whenever I am afraid, I think of all the times Ray may have been afraid, but it never stopped him. Not only did he serve his country, but I heard many stories that made me smile about his kids and grandkids. My own daughter, born after September 11 is named after Ray. Thank you for keeping his memory alive.

Comments : I first met Ray through Lee Ilepi while on a visit to Rescue 2 in the 1980’s. i had the honor to have a ride along with rescue 2 on several occasions and was grateful to ray for providing me information on the true essence of "rescue" and what it should be. many of the things he told me i took into my carrear and i’m sure that it probibly saved my butt more than a few times. ray’s murder (thats how i see it) is a light that the fire service will never be able to relight. Ray is one of a kind and others can only be compaired to him, never equaled. i make a tribute that i place on the 911 memorial in my town every year. ray is a part of it. my prayers to his family and please remember that as long as you remember someone, they are never dead
