| Signed on March 06 at 4:53 AM | | Name : | Tom Hannan | | Rank / Title : | lieutenant | | Website : | http:// | | Location : | Rutgers University | | Comments : | Interesting to finally get to read something "about" you--I have read a lot written by you--now I know the man. I was first a Volunteer in Point Pleasant Beach Co. 2 from 1964 to 68. I was in the Air Force from 68 to 72 and served on fire depts in local towns ---Fort Walton Beach Florida, and Fairfield California --as a diversion from my military duty. I came back to New Brunswick in 1973 and immediately went on the NBFD but with the layoffs I went to the Rutgers University Fire department---been there ever since. You probably remember the controversy when our chief sold the trucks and now 125 men and women respond in various SUVs and pick up trucks. Thank God we don’t have fires. I still volunteer at Community Station 25 in Somerset---I still like my favorite--TRUCK work. At 60 years old it keeps me healthy and active--we work a 4 on and 4 off schedule. I still do summers in Point Pleasant Beach, will probably move there permanently when I retire. It was nice to finally meet you--I have read your works and enjoyed learning what I did from you. |

Luckily then I had the good sense, to NOT BE WEARING THE GEAR THAT WAS ISSUED TO ME. I was wearing bunker pants& boots that I had purchased myself. Heavy leather works gloves (ANG) issue. I was wering my SCOTT air tank& mask, helmet & coat. The fire backdrafted and I got injured. 20% 3rd degree burns on my upper body; evne though I WAS WEARING ALL MY PROTECTIVE GEAR. yOUR ARTICLE WAS EXCELLENT AND RIGHT ON THE MONEY If you get issued gear wear all of it. The one time you don’t is when it will happen. Take care Chief. You are the best. |

The recent tragedy in Charleston is a prime example of the consequences of the "tradition unimpeded by progress" syndrome. Instead of thermal injuries and smoke inhalation on those nine death certificates, the cause of death should be listed as TRADITION.Thanks for all you do! |

Your latest "Why Did he Die", bears truth to the fact we still have a long way to go in training safety. Never we can believe that everyone is aware of standards and practices. This fact is proven by firefighter injuries and deaths from the same root causes over and over again during training excersizes. I believe in live training in acquired structures. In my opinion there is no better training. However to do this type of training is a huge responsibility, requires a thorough knowledge of 1403 and referenced standards, and the willingness to do a lot of prep work. If you are not willing to do the work DO NOT do the drill, you will get someone hurt or killed, and you will probably legislate a ban against "live acquired structure training" nation wide. I am looking forward to your visit to the NH Fire Academy in March.DC Beland |

The trials and tribulations of the fire service in the Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, and Hazleton areas of NEPA have been nothing short of a challenge for us career folk trying to survive the constant budget and staffing cuts with an increased work load. May I be the first to sign the guest book and to thank you for and wish you well in spreading the word of the fire service today. I’m always on the lookout for credible information that I can take and put to use in our small corner of the world. Take care and much success with the new web site. |
